Why…..just why????? (The Marvel Comics edition)

While most of DC Comics character movies are still in production, with only ‘Green Lantern’ coming out this Summer, Marvel and Marvel Studios have three, yes THREE movies coming out shortly. Marvel has been hit or (oh-dear-Lord, what did I just watch) miss, with their movies, for the last 12 years. For every ‘X-Men’, there was ‘Hulk’ (I still shudder at the thought). I feel Marvel will be 1-2 this summer, with it’s offerings.

First up, ‘X-Men: First Class’

This trailer has more questions than answers. My biggest question is how fucked up are they going to make the White Queen’s story? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE THE WHITE QUEEN, so I see myself sobbing in the theater. Sadly, I’m not looking forward to this film at all.

Next is ‘Thor’

I’m totally on the fence about this film. On one hand, I want to see it, on the big screen; because it looks amazing!! On the other hand, it’s Thor….a character I never really cared for. I’ll probably pick it up, when it comes out on DVD.

And last, but not least, ‘Captain America’

If you told me that some day I would be counting down the days until a Captain America movie opened, I would have said you were crazy! In my vast comic book collection, I own two Captain America issues, and I only bought them because there was an appearance from Silver Sable in them (Oh!! Imagine if there was a Silver Sable movie bing made?!?! THAT would be awesome!!….but I digress). And, HELLO Chris Evans!! Ladies, if that doesn’t make you line up for a ticket, then we need to have a talk.

I’m blissfully on the edge of many of the comics that are in the movies. My biggies were Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Sgt. Rock & Sgt. Fury. S-man and B-man I expect to get butchered, Spiderman was OK and I appreciated for all the traditional Spidy poses thrown in. However, in my mind MJ was smoking hot and they could have done better than KD for her.
I thought F-4 was handled OK (not just because I love the Dark Angel). The others are all a little more fuzzy in my memory (40 years ago is a long time!) and so unless they really suck as standalone movies (stayed away from the Hulk), I’ll probably be OK.

Some of the others came out at the “end” of my comic reading career that I thought were really interesting. I’ve only read a one or two issues of X-Men and maybe leafed through Hellboy. I love these movies and the treatment they’ve gotten.

I think that my main beef is that in many cases they try to stuff too much story in one movie. It’s like they fear that they have to tell everything, because they fear they won’t get to make the next one, instead of realizing that each of these stories can stand alone, even if you’re a casual observer. It’s like trying to pack all the HP novels into one giant clusterfuck film or as if the LOTR needed to become one movie.

Another great post! Just agreeing with you again, esp. about Captain America! Holy Moley! One of the few films I’m looking forward to, and not just for the eye candy.

    xx
