An Open Letter to Cowhead

In an effort to rile up the Boston Bruins fan base, the Boston Bruins PR Dept. made some posters mocking the fans of other teams, A YEAR AGO! The most famous of these was the one dedicated to the Philadelphia Flyers fans:

While, I’m sure the fans of the Flyers were not amused, esp. their female fans; it caused some chuckles for both fan bases

This season, The Bear returned, first when we played the Montreal Canadiens:

And again, when we played the Flyers, again; the Bear had a comment about cholesterol running through the veins of the Flyers fans, where as ‘we bleed Black & Gold’.

After the Bruins swept the Flyers and we were getting ready to play the Tampa Bay Lightning, new posters were put up around the TD Garden:

I chuckled.

However, down in the ‘great’ state of Florida, a…… well, man is too strong of a word to describe him, so we’ll say person; who calls himself “Cowhead” got QUITE upset that the Boston Bruins would DARE say that the Tampa Bay Lightning had no fans. So upset, that he went on his (I’m taking his word for it) #1 radio show and complained…..by using every homophobic and hate driven words he could possibly think of; which wasn’t much, because he repeated himself, a lot.

In the end, two unfortunate things happened. 1) TD Garden and the Boston Bruins caved and took down the signs and 2) Cowhead ‘won’. And in true ‘winners’ fashion, he then proceeded to rub it in all of our faces.

Mr. Cowhead, I have this to say to you. While these posters poked fun at other fan bases, they weren’t mean spirited, offensive or hateful; however your choice of words and expressions were. I feel sad for the Tampa Bay Lightning fans (who I know there are a great many of)  have YOU as their voice for the team. I hope that situation sheds some light on who Tampa Bay associates themselves with and with any luck, you’ll be unemployed soon.

So, enjoy this small victory. Enjoy tonight’s game. But remember, the series isn’t over yet.

Why…..just why????? (The Marvel Comics edition)

While most of DC Comics character movies are still in production, with only ‘Green Lantern’ coming out this Summer, Marvel and Marvel Studios have three, yes THREE movies coming out shortly. Marvel has been hit or (oh-dear-Lord, what did I just watch) miss, with their movies, for the last 12 years. For every ‘X-Men’, there was ‘Hulk’ (I still shudder at the thought). I feel Marvel will be 1-2 this summer, with it’s offerings.

First up, ‘X-Men: First Class’

This trailer has more questions than answers. My biggest question is how fucked up are they going to make the White Queen’s story? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE THE WHITE QUEEN, so I see myself sobbing in the theater. Sadly, I’m not looking forward to this film at all.

Next is ‘Thor’

I’m totally on the fence about this film. On one hand, I want to see it, on the big screen; because it looks amazing!! On the other hand, it’s Thor….a character I never really cared for. I’ll probably pick it up, when it comes out on DVD.

And last, but not least, ‘Captain America’

If you told me that some day I would be counting down the days until a Captain America movie opened, I would have said you were crazy! In my vast comic book collection, I own two Captain America issues, and I only bought them because there was an appearance from Silver Sable in them (Oh!! Imagine if there was a Silver Sable movie bing made?!?! THAT would be awesome!!….but I digress). And, HELLO Chris Evans!! Ladies, if that doesn’t make you line up for a ticket, then we need to have a talk.

Why…..just why????? (The DC Comics edition)

For those who don’t know, I am an avid comic book collector. So it breaks my heart to see Hollywood slowly killing a medium I love so much. You would think that turning a comic book into a movie would be pretty easy: the story, script and story boards are all there; sometimes put together in a handy graphic novel. The characters are all developed, with their own back story and conflicts. But, unfortunately, Hollywood needs thing to be BIGGER and BETTER!!

*sigh*

Now, I could used a dozen of examples of were Hollywood has screwed up the stories of the many comic book characters that I love; (For every ‘Spider-Man’ movie, there’s ‘Spider-Man 3′) but thankfully (?) there are a few hitting the theaters (and tv screens) this Summer and Fall, for me to tear apart.

First we’ll go with the obvious: DC Comics. You’d think that DC Comics would have the easiest time time making a movie version of one of their characters: they have the two most recognizable characters in field: Batman and Superman; and they are owned by Warner Bros. This should be a no brainer!! Yet, they keep making the same mistake, which causes them to fail: Jam as many movie stars into the film as possible!! For the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot, I had high hopes. They had cast ‘unknown’ (not to me) actor Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent. I love this! Not only does he fit the bill looks-wise, but he doesn’t have any baggage from previous roles weighing him down (Something Robert Pattinson will have to deal with for the next few years). However, with reports of Diane Lane and Kevin Costner taking on the roles of Martha and Jonathan Kent; I started to get nervous. Why the ‘big stars’ for two roles, that will be finished within 30 minutes of the movie?? Now it’s been announced that Amy Adams will play the role of Lois Lane………WHY?!? Don’t get me wrong I like Amy Adams, but she’s NOT Lois Lane!! Lois is tough as nails and cynical and ‘one of the guys’ working in a ‘man’s occupation’ . Which is why Superman turns her world around. He brings out the feminine in her and makes her softer and opens her eyes to the world around her, that doesn’t involve getting a Pulitzer Prize. If she’s already a wide eyed ‘wow!’ type girl, how is he going to surprise/shock her with his powers??

As much as I like Superman, I love Batman more. But the problem I have with DC & Warner Bros. adaptations of Batman is two fold. Not only do they try to cram as many BIG STARS as they can into the movie, they also cram as many Batman characters into one film as well. I enjoyed ‘Batman Begins’, it was a good beginning piece, with two lesser known villains: The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul, battling Batman. However,  I started seeing the same problems creep into this franchise when ‘Batman: The Dark Knight’ came out. You have a classic tale of Batman vs. The Joker, a rivalry as old as the Boston Bruins vs. the Montreal Canadiens….why add another villain, Two-Face, to the mix?? (And leave out Harley Quinn, which is a crime!!) Now, with the upcoming ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ you are going to see Bane, Catwoman AND the Holiday Killer!! All three of these characters could hold their own in an individual movie, against Batman. WHY PUT ALL THREE IN ONE FILM???

Then of course, there’s this:

Yes, DC and Warner Bros. are retooling a Wonder Woman TV series and THIS monstrosity is what actress Adrianne Palicki will be wearing. WHY???? WHY WOULD THE POWERS THAT BE DECIDE THAT A COSTUME THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME (OK, 60+ years) NEEDS TO BE REVAMPED?????? Granted, DC Comics just recently revamped Wonder Woman’s costume in the book, but I don’t remember seeing Diana in shiny rubber. Seriously, what was the costume department thinking when they came up with this?? Sorry Warner Bros., but there’s only one Wonder Woman:

And finally, we have the “Green Lantern’ movie coming out this Summer. I was looking forward to this….until I saw the trailer:

I love Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, but there are parts of the trailer, esp. near the end, that make me cringe. Let’s hope it’s just bad editing.

(Part 2: Marvel coming soon!)

OMG, It’s ANOTHER Post!

Sorry, I just saw something on Twitter, that reminded me of something else I wanted to talk about.

After the Bruins loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night, a lot of people on Twitter were moaning and groaning about being a Bruins fan. Which, of course, made me question it also. Trust me, my life would be a lot easier if I was a Pittsburgh Penguins fan (typed that without vomiting! YAY!) I mean, all I’d have to do is throw on a Crosby jersey, drink the Kool-Aid and WHOOO HOOO Go Pens!!! (Ok, Now, I’m gonna go vomit)

So, why am I a Boston Bruins fan? I, honestly, don’t know. I’m sure some of it has to do with growing up in New England. But I do wonder if I was born in New York, Detroit or Chicago; would I be a Rangers, Red Wings or Blackhawks fan? Perhaps, but I’d like to think that some how the Bruins would still appeal to me. Maybe I like to support the ‘underdogs’? Perhaps, who doesn’t? Maybe it’s just something that’s unexplainable, like your favorite flavor of ice cream. All I know is this; last Summer I tried to root for the Chicago Blackhawks, after the Bruins were eliminated (that’s right, eliminated!) from the playoffs. But my heart wasn’t in it. In fact, I felt like I was cheating on the Bruins.

There it is, plain and simple. I’m a Boston Bruins fan! I love them no matter what! Through thick and thin, good times and bad, sickness and in health, richer or…..Wait, those are wedding vows….well, you get the idea.

I love my Bruins! Unless the Bruins trade Milan Lucic, then I’m outta here!!

Just kidding………..kind of

Go Bruins!

OMG, It’s a new post!

HI! I know, I’ve been absent here for a few…months. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about things to rant and ramble about. I just haven’t had the time to sit and put my ideas in order. And since it looks like my brain isn’t going to cooperate any time soon, I’m going to post a couple of things here today. Hopefully, by cleaning out some ‘clutter’, I’ll be able to focus on future postings.

Dear Bruins fans, Cam Neely is NOT going to step behind the players bench and start coaching the Boston Bruins. Something tells me that if Neely wanted to be head coach, he’d be the Bruins head coach. He’s Cam Neely! He can do what ever he wants, when it comes to the Bruins organization. SO STOP WISHING FOR IT! Besides, as President, he has more power…that I hope he will be using very soon! And speaking of Claude Julien; he’s not going anywhere, anytime soon, either. It would be too expensive to replace him and who are we going to get to replace him?? However, his defensive coaching system DOES NOT WORK! In fact, it really hasn’t worked all season. This is where Neely needs to step in and take some control. I’d like Neely to tell Julien to throw out his play book and make a new one. And right now would be the perfect time to do something like that. We’re in first place of the Northeast Division, with two games in hand, over the Montreal Canadiens. If we lose one or two games, while trying something new, I wouldn’t be upset. Because if nothing changes with the system that’s in place, we are going to lose those games anyway.

Another problem I have with Julien, is the lack of support he gives his players. Clearly, there huge morale problem in the Bruins locker room. Case in point: Milan Lucic. Ever since the (bullshit) Unsportsmanlike Behavior penalty he received, during the Buffalo Sabres game on December 15; Lucic has been playing with extreme caution….while trying to control his anger/frustration. I don’t know what was said to him after the game, but it’s more than obvious he was blamed for the Bruins loss that night, which is unfair. As the Head Coach, Julien should have either tried to calm Lucic down, on the bench, or stood by his player afterwards. Instead, Lucic gave the ref an earful from the bench, and got the penalty. Meanwhile, after the game Julien told reporters that Lucic should have ‘sucked it up’. Sorry, Claude, YOU’RE in charge of the team, during a game, it YOU’RE job to control your players and keep their emotions in check and focused on the game. You need to shoulder some of the responsibility for the loss, as well! On top of all of that, I’m sure Lucic ‘enjoyed’ watching Sidney Crosby, during HBO’s 24/7 series, saying A LOT worse to a ref, and NOT get a penalty.

And speaking of HBO’s 24/7 series, I much as I hate to admit it, I really enjoyed it. Not only did it make my hate for the Pittsburgh Penguins grow, but it also made me love and appreciate my Boston Bruins more! Two things I never thought  possible!

And look at that, the Boston Bruins are playing the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight, in Pittsburgh! Unfortunately, Sidney Crosby is out, with a concussion…..Huh, I wonder if Pittsburgh believes in karma?

Go Bruins!

You know, it’s funny…..

So, I’m reading all the reviews from the Boston Bruins trip and games, over in Prague, this past weekend. It’s been a truly fascinating read. Oh, what a difference a summer will make things! How quickly some people forget!

Here’s the thing, folks; I try to be a fair person, esp. with the Bruins. If a player is not performing up to the (very high) standards, we as Boston fans have set; I’ll take off my fangirl hat and reluctantly agree with some of the masses. HOWEVER, if a player has an excuse, like say an injury or a personal situation; I will cut the player a whole lot of slack and defend him to the masses!

This weekend proved VERY interesting and satisfying! For example: Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask. First, let me say, I love Tuukka! He’s (obviously) a great goalie and his loss on Saturday was not, entirely, his fault. But if Thomas was the one to let in 4 goals, he would have been pulled! For some reason, Rask doesn’t get to share in this humiliation, which is not fair. Since I’ve had to endure 10 months of ‘Trade Tim Thomas, he’s an over-paid bum’, I was pretty freaking excited to see him get the win AND a shut out yesterday! In my opinion, Thomas knows what kind of year he had last season (and if he didn’t, the boo-birds at the TD Garden would let him know) and he’s determined to prove a lot of people wrong! Here’s a crazy idea: why can’t we have two awesome goalies??

Example #2: Milan Lucic! While everyone was celebrating Nathan Horton’s 3 goals this weekend, which was great! (It’s nice, for once, to get a player and have him perform as expected, right off the bat); and then jizzing themselves over Tyler Seguin’s first NHL goal, which was great too. Um…someone else scored a goal this weekend! In fact, he scored the game winner!!! But you wouldn’t know that, since all everyone wants to talk about is Tyler Seguin. Don’t get me wrong, I like Seguin a lot, glad he’s on the team, etc. But after all the Twitter abuse I had to endure about Lucic last year, it was nice to see him return to form. Lucic is another player, looking to redeem himself, from last season and he’s off to a great start.

He's sticking his tongue out at all the haters

But, if you read the papers and the online blogs, or the highlights on YouTube; you wouldn’t know how Lucic or Thomas did. No one was talking about! And that’s what pissed me off! All I’m saying, Boston media, bloggers, fans, haters, etc; it’s OK to critique a players performance; sometimes it’s justified and they need to hear it. However, when you see them turning their game around, for the better, could you acknowledge that as well?
